Ravines Cabernet Franc, Finger Lakes, NY
Cabernet Franc may not be the trendiest grape but it’s hot in the Finger Lakes.
The Quick Sip
Cabernet Franc, a classic Bordeaux grape variety, has hit its stride in the Finger Lakes. Good examples abound like this beautiful one from Ravines Wine Cellars.
Though often not as herbaceous in character as classic Loire Valley renditions of the grape, Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc exhibits classic raspberry and plum fruit flavors combined with bright acidity. This makes Cabernet Franc a wonderful wine to pair with food.

Winemaker and co-owner, Morten Hallgren, has such an interesting story that we can’t honestly do it justice by trying to convey it hear (check out ravineswine.com to read it in his own words). That said, since founding Ravines Wine Cellars in 2001, Morten has been pushing the needle on quality in the Finger Lakes. His supremely mineral-driven Rieslings have garnered much critical acclaim, including a vineyard designate ‘Argetsinger’, which the New York Times’ wine critic, Eric Asimov, has described as ‘maybe the best American Riesling I’ve ever had’. In recent years, however, his red wines have helped redefine many people’s opinions of Finger Lakes red wines, which were often outclassed by the region’s white wines.
What it tastes like
Medium bodied with notes of plum, raspberry, herbs, and baking spice balanced by savory tannins and bright acidity.
In its youth, this wine really needs food to show its best. Try it with lean cuts of beef like roast beef and horseradish.
